A reading and discussion on the history, culture, problems, and possibilities of the city of Detroit. We will read selections from Max Weber, Lewis Mumford, Jane Jacobs, and Thomas Sugrue. Sugrue’s book, The Origins of the Urban Crisis, $22.95 pb. can be purchased new or used at Wayne State University Bookstore.

A reading and discussion course on “The Old Testament” prophets, including Isaiah, Amos, and Hosea, who pronounced judgment on Israel for its idolatry while exulting in Israel’s devotion to God as the Holy One of Israel. No previous background in biblical studies is assumed. Class members provide their own Bibles.

A reading and discussion course on the 20th century ministers who broke the color line in the American Unitarian Association. The text is Mark Morrison-Reed, Black Pioneers in a White Denomination, $16 pb. Copies are on sale at the church office. M-F 9-12.

A three-week orientation to Unitarian Universalism and to the First UU Church of Detroit. Topics include UU principles, UU history, and opportunities for spiritual and ethical growth.

Note: All persons are warmly invited to participate in these programs. Tuition must be paid in advance at the church office. If less than seven persons sign up for a course, it may not be offered (at the discretion of the instructor). Also, instructors may limit the number of registrants in a given course. A brief course evaluation will be conducted at the final session.
Future programs under consideration include The Draft, Female Spirituality, Aging, The Artist’s Way, and Challenges for Non-Traditional Couples. We invite your suggestions for future classes.
